"Based on data collected by the EIA (Energy Information Agency) for the year 2000, No. 2 heating oil is consumed in 7.7 million homes in the United States, of which 69% or 5.3 million homes are located in the Northeast corridor. Residential consumption of No. 2 heating oil in 2000 was 6.7 billion gallons of which 88% or 5.5 billion gallons were consumed in the 11 Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern states."
