Sleeping problems, help?

I am not really sure what to do. I am 18 and I am at college, I have alot of time off because I am not able to sleep longer than a hour a night, sometimes I will go to bed at 10pm and still be wide awake at 5am, I have early starts for college to. I have tried drinking hot milk, changing my sleeping time, changing my quilt and pillows, I have tried herbal remedies such as calms and RSI. I am currently doing a a level course at college, If i take any more time off because of my sleeping I will not be allowed back next year and I will probably fail my course due to lack of cocentration. I also drive and I am unable to drive like this. I dont really fancy sleeping pills to be honest, I have heard alot of bad stuff about them. I am going to the docters tomorrow but is it worth going if I dont want to be on sleeping pills? Like is there anything else they can give me? Please help really unsure weather I should go or not. I really cant take much more of it, its putting me down and making me really upset.
